PT. Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (Persero) established on July 1, 1964 is the only one national classification entity assigned by the government of the Republic of Indonesia to classify the Indonesian and foreign flag commercial ship regularly operating in Indonesian waters.
The classification activity itself constitutes classification of ship based on hull construction, machinery and electricity of ship with a view to assessing the ship's seaworthiness.
Taking into account Indonesia's nature condition consisting of thousands of islands with very vast marine territory which it is used as a sea transportation means in form of ship constituting the most important facility that must be managed, a cautious, regular and systematic survey to the ship's condition is required to keep object's and life's safety at the sea.
Based on the above condition and driven by national awareness and desire to have national classification board which in turn will give opportunity to local ship engineers, then in 1964, the Government established PN. Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia.
BKI is an organization established and applying technical standard in conducting design, construction and survey marine activities relating to floating facility, including vessel and offshore construction. This standard is prepared and issued by BKI as technical publication. A ship designed and constructed based on BKI standard will obtain Classification Certificate issued by BKI. BKI will issue this after conducting classification survey required.
As independent and self-governing Classification Board, BKI has no interest in commercial aspect relating to ship design, ship construction, ship ownership, ship operation, ship management, ship maintenance/repair, insurance or chartering.

Besides conducting ship classification, BKI is also trusted by the Government to conduct survey & statutory certification on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, among others Load Line, ISM Code and ISPS Code (see
